Questions about Safety Razors
How to shave with a safety razor?

Shaving with a safety razor is a traditional and effective method that requires a proper technique for a smooth and comfortable shave. The most important steps are:

  1. Prepare your skin by cleansing it with warm water.
  2. Wet your shaving brush and create a lather with shaving cream or soap.
  3. Hold the razor with a relaxed grip and shave with the grain of your hair growth.
  4. Rinse your face between passes and reapply lather for a second and a third pass.
  5. Rinse your face with cold water and pat dry.
  6. Apply an alum stone, aftershave, or moisturizer to soothe and moisturize your skin.

How should I care for my new razor?

To properly care for a safety razor, follow these steps:

  1. After each use, rinse the razor thoroughly with warm water to remove any excess hair and shaving cream.
  2. Use a soft cloth or brush to gently scrub the razor, paying special attention to the blades and the area between the blades. This will help remove any built-up soap or grime.
  3. Dry the razor thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth to prevent rust and corrosion.
  4. Store the razor in a dry, cool place, away from moisture and direct sunlight.
  5. Regularly inspect the blades and replace them as needed to ensure a smooth, close shave.
  6. Avoid dropping or mishandling the razor, as this can damage the blades and the handle.
  7. If the razor has a removable blade, carefully remove and replace the blade using the appropriate tool. This will help prevent injury and maintain the razor’s performance.
How should maintenance be done?

To clean your safety razor, follow these steps:

  1. Remove the blade from the razor by twisting the handle to loosen the blade.
  2. Rinse the blade under hot water to remove any excess hair or soap.
  3. Use a small brush, such as a toothbrush, to gently scrub the blade to remove any remaining dirt or debris. You can also use a blade cleaning solution or rubbing alcohol to help disinfect the blade and remove any bacteria.
  4. Rinse the blade thoroughly under hot water to remove any cleaning solution or soap.
  5. Dry the blade thoroughly with a clean towel or cloth.
  6. Reassemble the blade and handle, being sure to tighten the blade securely in place.

It’s a good idea to clean your safety razor regularly to maintain its effectiveness and extend its lifespan. You should also replace the blade periodically, as dull blades can cause irritation and increase the risk of cuts and nicks.

What are the differences between Open Comb and Closed Comb?

The Open Comb (OC) plate is designed to guide stubble against the blade, making it easier to cut longer and thicker hair. Its dented configuration allows more lather to remain on the face and gives higher exposure between your skin and the blade.

The Closed Comb (CC) plate is our smoothest option and the most popular. It is designed with small grooves along the edges of the plate giving less blade exposure to the skin.

What is the best material for my razor?

Titanium and stainless steel are both popular materials for safety razors, and each has its own unique properties and characteristics. Here are some key differences between titanium and stainless steel safety razors:

  • Durability: Both titanium and stainless steel are known for their durability, but titanium is generally considered to be stronger and more corrosion-resistant than stainless steel. A titanium safety razor may be a good choice for those who want a long-lasting, high-quality tool that can withstand regular use.
  • Weight: Titanium is generally lighter than stainless steel, so a titanium safety razor may be a good choice for those who prefer a lighter-weight tool. However, the weight difference between the two materials may not be significant, depending on the size and design of the razor.
  • Cost: Titanium safety razors tend to be more expensive than stainless steel razors due to the higher cost of titanium as a material. If budget is a concern, a stainless steel safety razor may be a more economical choice.
  • Blades: Both titanium and stainless steel safety razors can be used with standard double-edge razor blades, so the choice of material does not affect the type of blade you can use.

Ultimately, the best choice between a titanium and stainless steel safety razor will depend on your personal preferences and needs. Both materials have their own strengths and limitations, and the best choice for you will depend on your specific shaving habits and requirements.

Can a stainless steel safety razor rust with time?

Yes, a stainless steel safety razor can rust over time. Stainless steel is a type of steel that contains chromium, which helps to prevent rust and corrosion. However, even stainless steel can rust if it is not properly cared for or if it is exposed to certain conditions.

One common cause of rust on a stainless steel safety razor is water exposure. If the razor is not dried thoroughly after use, water can collect on its surface and begin to corrode the metal. This can cause rust to form, especially if the razor is stored in a damp or humid environment.

Another cause of rust on a stainless steel safety razor is exposure to other corrosive substances. For example, some shaving creams and soaps contain ingredients that can react with the metal and cause it to rust. Similarly, if the razor is stored near other metal objects, such as a razor blade, it may be prone to rusting.

To prevent rust on a stainless steel safety razor, it is important to keep it clean and dry after use. It should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated place, away from other metal objects. Additionally, it is important to avoid using harsh or abrasive cleaning products on the razor, as these can damage the protective coating and make it more susceptible to rust.

What makes a good razor?

A good razor is characterized by several factors, including its design, construction, and blade performance. Look for razors crafted from premium materials like stainless steel or brass, as these materials offer durability and longevity.

Additionally, consider the razor’s weight and balance, as well as ergonomic handle designs that provide comfort and control during shaving.

Moreover, a good razor should deliver consistently smooth and close shaves with minimal irritation. Pay attention to features such as blade alignment, blade exposure, and blade gap, as these factors contribute to the razor’s performance.

A razor with precise machining tolerances and attention to detail ensures optimal blade alignment, resulting in a comfortable and efficient shaving experience.

Which of your razors is more aggressive?

The Nodachi Open Comb is our more aggressive safety razor. It is designed to provide a more efficient and precise shave, particularly for those with thicker or denser facial hair.

Why do I feel so secure with your razor?

We understand that a great shaving experience is essential, and that’s why we prioritize both the functionality and aesthetics of our razors. In order to reach a smooth shave, we have designed and implemented the Unique Fitting System and Blade vibration-damping design.

The Unique Fitting System is responsible for:
– High perpendicularity between handle and razor head which permits better precision during the shaving:
– Symmetrical load distribution on the threads preventing excessive wear and increasing resistance.
-Compact and reduced clearance between the parts which provides:

-Less vibration on the blade cutting line;

-Smoother and safer shave;

-Increase in blade tool life.

– Protection of mechanical deformation of the threaded pin on the top cap, even in the eventuality of dropping the razor.

-Alignment of the blade and parts always in the same position, independently if you close the razor one way or another;

The unique fitting system is applied in:
-The outer handle top cylinder
-The inner hole on the plate
-The inner cylinder on the handle
– The outer cylinder on the cap.

Seems confusing? Here is an explained draft where each colour will precisely slide with each other (see the colours).

It’s not only the Unique Fitting System that is responsible for a 0-blade chatter-free.

We took this issue very seriously, asked users’ opinion, and studied and tested it with different prototypes.

We understood then that we needed a rigid blade design to restrain the vibratory motion, such as mechanical oscillations of the blade, and to considerably improve the shaving experience, especially the performance when shaving against the grain.

Blade vibration-damping design

The solution is another of the Tatara secrets.

We conceive a damping design, a wide contact area that supports and clamps the blade between the cap and base plate!  It guarantees contact and forces enough for the blade to not vibrate during the shave, giving it the smoothest shave possible.

Muramasa Series
Do I need to apply grease to the Muramasa?

For better maintenance and after cleaning the razor several times during the years, you could apply a small amount of oil, or petroleum jelly (vaseline), to the dial and sliding plates. This will assure the movement is kept smooth throughout the years.

Do I need to replace the Muramasa O-ring?

The Muramasa is done in 316L stainless steel that has very low wear, especially in such short movements as the dial paths. The razor was built to endure a lifetime.

You do not need to disassemble the razor every time you shave, we actually advise doing it 3-4 times a year for in-depth cleaning, if necessary.

The lubrification is not necessary for rotating the dial, we mostly do it once the parts are ready to certify the tunning of the razor was well done and is accordingly to our expectations.

If you are unlucky and accidentally cut the o-ring, we can provide more o-rings or you can buy them online from other suppliers. The O-ring longevity is unknown but they are done to endure a lifetime too. We have the Muramasa now and in 3 years we never had to replace the O-ring.

What is the Muramasa and its patent?

The Muramasa – Adjustable Safety Razor is our revolutionary and most recent product. Being 5 razors in 1 and having an innovative adjustment system where you can change the BG and BE at the same time!
